About this Currach Activity

The HQ2O Currach programme is built around three connected elements: build, lanugage and rowing. Our Currachs have been handcrafted specifically for use on the River Liffey. We offer currach rowing sessions ranging from relaxed ‘come and have a go’ experiences for beginners, to more focused sessions for those with experience who want to develop technique, boat handling and crew skills. The experience offers a calm and immersive contrast to the energy of the city by passing under Dublin’s iconic bridges and taking in the city’s architecture from a unique vantage point.

Led by a local guide, experienced in currach rowing, you will learn the basics of rowing a traditional Irish currach – a lightweight, handcrafted boat that has been part of coastal life for many generations. What is the Full Liffey Currach Experience?

Go beyond the city center and experience the River Liffey from port to weir. This extended 3hr guided currach rowing journey takes you from HQ2O along the River Liffey all the way to Islandbridge Weir and back, covering the full navigable stretch of the river through Dublin city. The journey begins in the heart of Dublin where the river is framed by bridges, quay walls and architecture. As you row west past Heuston Station, something remarkable happens, the city softens, the pace slows, and the river transforms. Tree lined banks replace stone walls. The sound of traffic fades into birdsong. This quitter stretch of the Liffey feels almost untouched, a hidden side of Dublin that surprises even locals. Wildlife becomes part of the experience here. Seals are regularly spotted in this stretch of river, while flashes of blue from kingfishers dart along the riverbanks. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a rare glimpse of an otter.
With this extended experience you’ll have more time to settle into the rhythm of rowing a traditional currach, to connect more with the river and to fully experience Dublin’s contrast between urban life and natural beauty. Prior rowing experience or completion of the 1.5hr Liffey Currach Experience is an advantage for this extended option.
